It Makes That Sound

Have you ever noticed that the word plow can be a noun, a verb and a non-human interjection?

Noun: "Ben uses the new 8' Western plow to push snow out of the way."

Verb: "There is a lot of snow on the ground.  Ben is going to plow it now."

Comic Book Sound Effect: "PLOW!  Deep snow is no match for Ben and his new plow truck."

Thanks to a great friend with a keen eye, we purchased a new (to us) pick up truck with a plow.  It's a solid vehicle with a strong engine and it was well below our budget.  That means we are continuing to move farther down our list of projects and purchases as we enter the new year. What a blessing!

Going Green

That's right... we bought a Gator.  Our 25 year old golf cart, which we have owned for the past seven years, bit the dust this summer.  Actually, we could have gotten it running again.  The cost: a bunch of new parts, a lot of labor and more new parts.  We were certainly on the verge of buying a new golf cart in parts and sticking on an old frame.  Then of course, it would probably brake down again in a week.

For the past seven years it has served us well.  But, it was time to say goodbye to the golf cart before we ended up saying goodbye to our wallets.  Recently, we said, "Hello" to a brand new John Deere Gator.  It's a golf cart on steroids.  It's beefy enough to do everything we need it to... but not so Herculian that we will be tempted to overwork it.

Thanks to generous investors we have been able to purchase this brand new Gator and accomplish so much more on a very big list of projects and purchases that will propel us into 2014.

Perfect

The temperatures are cooling down, the leaves are changing and the grass isn't growing as fast... fall is finally here.  It's the perfect time for a bocce ball tournament.

This past weekend we had the pleasure of hosting our friends from the Special Olympics for their annual bocce ball tournament.

Lions and Tigers and Beds, Oh my!

Well... no lions and tigers.  But, we do have beds.  108 brand new beds to be exact.  And... if you are going to put new beds in the cabins you might as well paint the walls, ceilings and floors, install new windows on the front and buy new mattresses too.

Check out the upgrades to our camper cabins.  They are ready to go for this summer!

Where did Spring go?

It was 31 degrees this morning at Arrowhead.  Summer camp is just a month away... and it makes me think, "Where did Spring go?"

We have been busy working on projects and preparing camp for another big summer season.  But, before we get ahead of ourselves, check out some pictures for our Shepherds Spring Retreat.

What Kind of Leader Are You?

This past weekend was the launch of Leadership Dynamics in Camping Ministry, a 3-credit undergraduate LBC course we now offer here at Arrowhead.

Here's a photo from the lighter side of the course.  Can you tell which one is the Polar Turtle?

Actually, it was a pretty intense weekend.  But, the uniqueness of the camp setting and various teaching formats made for a fantastic learning environment.  For me, it was a great blessing - to live and learn in community with students preparing for life and ministry.

We have two more weekends - one here at Arrowhead in conjunction with our Shepherds Camp Spring Retreat and the other on campus at LBC.  I am also looking forward to our Discipleship course which will be offered over the summer.

Found this graphic tucked away here at camp.  Depending on who you are... it's from back in the day.  What caption would you give it?

James Project 2013

Our winter retreat season is in full swing.  One of my favorite parts of serving our guests is partnering with families, students and other ministries through the James Project.  From washing dishes and cleaning bathrooms to scrubbing pots and sharing a meal together.

5K Baby!

Congratulations to our friends and ministry partners (through the James Project) over at TLA.  They reached the top 5 and have been granted $5,000 for The Warehouse - TLA's new facility in Hanover.  With a few clicks each day (which totaled more than 11,000 votes) the impact on the lives of students and their local community is going to be huge.  The grant will be used to propel them forward on projects like artificial turf installation, equipment for community outreaches, and technology for mentoring athletes.

I had the opportunity to visit The Warehouse, meet up with their Org. Leaders and watch the beginning of a training session.

We are excited to see TLA's mission moving forward and are thrilled to have them serve with us again this summer as a James Project group.

Team Building

Nothing fosters team unity like taping one of your team members to a wall.

It is the full experience:
  • A clearly defined objective
  • Strategy and planning
  • Decision making
  • Evaluation and assessment

Resolving to be Resolute - D3

What's your New Year's resolution?  Do you want to be more crafty in 2013... maybe try out some of those Pinterest ideas or get yourself on Etsy?  How about training for a canoe race?  Of course, there is always the thought of eating healthier.  Perhaps it is time to start dressing more stylish... start with that hat you have always wanted.  Spending more time with family would be a great New Year's resolution.  How about being more adventurous?  You could try one of those guided tours.  I say, spend more time with your friends.

Join Me - D11

Here is a note I received from one of our investors.  It would be our privilege to have you join him by investing in our Pontoon Paddle Boat Project.

"I was glad to receive your letter inviting me to invest in the new Pontoon Paddle Boat Project!  It is such a worthwhile endeavor!  I cannot think of a better way to help your campers experience the water!  The new pontoon boats will prove to be accessible, safe and enjoyable.  They will provide an opportunity for every camper to “go boating” regardless of age or mobility! Unless I miss my guess, the waterfront at Arrowhead will be a busy place this summer!  Thanks for putting the campers first.  I’m secretly hoping that the project will be fully funded by early spring! Keep up the good work!"

The Box - D24

James Project 2013 is almost full... and it's not even 2013. We have just a couple more spots available.  Hundreds of James Project group members will serve with us throughout the retreat seasons and summer.  One of the most exciting parts of the James Project is the variety of groups that come to serve.  From student ministries and leadership programs to families and other para-church ministries each group is uniquely different.
